#DOOM 64 GZDOOM MOD#
There's a hub world (I guess you'd call it the Doom version of Peach's castle) and Batandy built a chapter system like Mario 64's, where you'll enter the same large map multiple times with different goals to complete. Doom 64: Retribution is a mod for Doom II, created by Nevander. Batandy describes those levels as being more linear, while the objective of this new mod is to build something more sandboxy, akin to Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie. It doesnt matter if you got it from Steam, GOG, or even if you got the BFG Edition. You require GZDoom or Zandronum installed, and you need to own Doom 2 to play it. No, you cant play it on the N64 (its hardware couldnt even render the effects being used here to start with). Golden Souls 2 is actually a huge mod, with around 50 platforming levels. This is a total conversion made for GZDoom/Zandronum for PC. This mod overhauls the entire game by adding everything from glory kills to selectable weapon states and even DOOM 2016-inspired. sound effects and music from that game, for use with a launcher like GZDoom.
Golden Souls 3 isn't actually Batandy's first Mario-inspired Doom mod. DOOM 64 is a lesser-known and underappreciated chapter in the Doom franchise that originally debuted on the Nintendo 64 way back in. Only on hard will a fall mean instant death. It aims to recreate the look and feel of Doom 64 as closely as possible, based on specifications obtained through reverse engineering, similar to how Kaiser. It is based on Doom3D, though rewritten for OpenGL rather than DirectX, and includes many bug fixes from Boom and MBF. On easy and normal, you'll lose coins or some health for falling in a pit. Doom64 EX is a reimplementation of Doom 64 for Linux, macOS, Windows, and Nintendo DS by Samuel 'Kaiser' Villarreal.
The modder even built in several difficulty options to make platforming less punishing. There are checkpoint flags and moving platforms to jump between, like in any good Mario game. Like Mario, he can now climb ledges and long jump. There's a lot of Mario DNA in Golden Souls, like a mission that tasks you with collecting "eight Slayer coins." There are coins all over these sprawling outdoor levels, enemies that look like piranha plants, and Doomguy has some new skills for getting around.
